Pakistan cricket team's tour to India 2007/2008

Whenever we think of an India-Pakistan cricket match it promises a great rivalry and excitement to millions of cricket fans in the sub continent. Pakistan cricket team is touring India for a treat of five One Day International cricket matches and two tests (schedule here).

Rahul Dravid was dropped from captaincy and his former deputy Virender Sehwag was appointed as the captain of the One-day squad for the first two matches. India won the first match but Pakistan may get back in the series in the 2nd ODI to be played tomorrow as Mohali pitch is pacer friendly. Pakistan pace star Shoaib Akhter may exploit this pitch if he plays.

10 November: Observe Nur Hossain Day

An appeal to the Bangladeshi bloggers (received via Email):

In March 1982, the army overthrew a democratically elected government in Bangladesh. The military junta cited rampant corruption and a breakdown in governance as the reasons for the intervention. The army chief, Lt Gen HM Ershad, went on to assume the presidency through farcical elections.

The general's rule, however, did not go unchallenged. There were frequent strikes and agitations. One such took place on 10 November 1987. On that day, a political activist named Nur Hossain had the words 'gonotontro mukti paak' (roughly translated as 'give back democracy') on his back.

Nur Hossain was killed by the security forces shortly after this photo was taken. See here for details.

Democracy is once again suspended in Bangladesh 16 years after it was re-established. Martyred Nur Hossain epitomizes the sacrifice and struggle of our fight for democracy.

November 10 2007 will be the 20th death anniversary of Nur hossain.

Rising Voices second round of microgrants for blog outreach

It has been five months since Rising Voices, the blog outreach project of Global Voices Online was launched.

This project aims to fix the imbalance in the so called global conversation:

"..certain regions of the world and certain demographics within those regions have benefited from the boom in citizen media more than others. Most bloggers and podcasters still tend to be middle or upper-middle class. Most have a college-level education. Most live in large cities. And of the 70 million weblogs now tracked by Technorati, 95% of them are written in just 10 languages. The truth is, what we often call the ‘global conversation,’ is a privileged discussion among global elites."

In July Rising voices funded five projects out of the 142 applications received from over 60 different countries. Its first round of grantees included exemplary projects from Bangladesh, Colombia and Bolivia who are making tremendous progress in bringing the underrepresented community into the global conversation.

Now Rising Voices is asking for second round of applications. Rising Voices outreach grants will range from $1,000 to $5,000. Details here.

The application process for second round of funding gives you more interactivity:

"You have the choice to submit your application via email as before or you can publicly post your proposal on our wiki and receive feedback on how it can be improved. Public applications can be posted on the wiki at any time and can be reworked as often as the applicant sees fit, but all applications must be finalized by the November 30 deadline."

Musharraf's game

The State of emergency in Pakistan was anticipated ever since Benazir Bhutto left for Dubai to meet her family members. Some say she was tipped off or was there to make a deal. All the news channels had been taken off air and mobile phone signals and Internet connections were jammed.

The judiciary is under attack as they are alleged to impede the war against terror by interfering with legislation and executive branches. The media is under attack to stop free flow of information and rallying against Musharrof, especially the overseas Pakistani TV channels like GEO.

The Pakistani Blogosphere tells its more than an state of emergency but just short of a martial law. Its an oxymoron really as Musharrof was the dictator last eight years playing the game of democracy.

The Pakistani general was impressed by the so far successful "minus 2 formula" of Bangladesh and this can still be implemented as a better option than any deal with Benazir Bhutto (or Nawaz Sharif) considering "the US did more than any other country to bring Bhutto back and broker the deal that would have brought democracy back to Pakistan".

Quite contradictorily experts say "the mute reaction of the United States clearly showed General Musharraf would have taken permission from the US before imposing emergency in Pakistan."

So its clearly a game and the pawn is the war against terror. Pakistani blog Chapati Mystery comments "Zimbabwe, here we come". Too bad for Pakistan.

Bangladesh Miracle

Have you heard about Miracle that has happened in Bangladesh over the last 30 years? No? Bangladesh has the highest population density among the worlds big countries, today, Bangladesh has more people than Russia. But the area is smaller than Florida.

So what is the Miracle? In 1970 an average women in Bangladesh gave birth to 7 children, and on of four of them died before the age of five. But after independence from Pakistan in 1971 things has improved. See Hans Rosling's GapCast to see how much.
